Alpaca beanies are a luxurious and cozy accessory that can last for years with proper care. Alpaca fibers are soft, lightweight, and naturally resistant to odors and moisture. However, they do require gentle handling to maintain their quality. Here’s a simple guide to washing your alpaca beanie without causing damage:
Materials Needed:
- Mild detergent (e.g., wool wash or baby shampoo. We also like Dr Bronners Liquid Soap)
- Basin or sink
- Cold water
- Towel
Step 1: Prepare the Wash
Fill a basin or sink with cold or luke warm water. Add a small amount of mild detergent—just enough to create light suds. Avoid harsh detergents or fabric softeners, as they can damage the delicate fibers.
Step 2: Hand Wash Gently
Submerge your alpaca beanie in the soapy water. Gently swirl it around to remove dirt and oils. Do not rub, wring, or twist the fabric, as this can cause stretching or felting.
Step 3: Rinse Thoroughly
Drain the soapy water and refill the basin with fresh water. Rinse the beanie thoroughly by gently pressing it under the water. Repeat if needed to ensure all detergent is removed.
Step 4: Remove Excess Water
Lay the beanie flat on a clean towel. Roll the towel up with the beanie inside and press gently to absorb excess water. Avoid wringing or twisting.
Step 5: Dry Flat
Shape the beanie to its original form and lay it flat on a dry towel in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Allow it to air dry completely.
Additional Tips:
- Avoid machine washing or tumble drying, as these can shrink or distort the fibers.
- Avoid using very hot water even when hand washing as this can cause the beanie to shrink/ felt.
- Store your alpaca beanie in a breathable bag during the off-season to prevent moth damage.
With proper care, your alpaca beanie will stay soft, warm, and beautiful for years to come!
